Remittances: A Tide that Does Not Lift All Boats
Excerpt from jury report: Yvonne Su’s presentation summarized her research on who benefits and who are excluded from the surge of remittances sent from the Filipino diaspora after Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda struck in 2013. Her research findings highlight the class-based inequalities that structure the distribution of remittances in post-disaster recovery. From her field experience, Yvonne argues that receiving remittances should not be used as an exclusionary criteria for obtaining humanitarian aid assistance because information on remittances is often scarce, ambiguous and context specific.
