Excerpt from jury report: This is a very interesting book arguing that conservative parties can benefit from authoritarian inheritance while still being able to contribute to democratic governance. This book presents a great comparative design, mobilizes significant amounts of data from varied sources and offers very thorough case descriptions. Besides a contribution to Latin American politics, this book can be readily used in the classroom.
