2019 CPSA conference paper – Bringing Epistemology into Intersectional Research: Lessons from Studying LGBTQ People of Colour Grassroots Activism

Excerpt from jury report: Labelle’s paper makes a compelling case for the importance of epistemology to intersectional research. Her discussion particularly illuminates the relevance of insider/outsider categories, the meaning of privilege and research ethics. The study reveals personal experiences of how emphases on visible minority and transgender inclusion may serve to distance white lesbians from grassroots social movement activism. Labelle examines what the paper terms “emotional labour” by social movement participants whose own personal crises hold major implications for protest organization. The discussion sets a remarkable standard with respect to both conceptual insight and empirical significance.
